Gabon has officially announced that local and legislative elections will be held on September 27. Members of the National Electoral Commission took their oath before the Constitutional Court, marking the formal start of the electoral process.
The voter registration review will run from July 14 to August 12 to update voter records, add new registrants, and remove ineligible voters.
Citizens aged 18 and above with a national ID number will be automatically registered but must select a polling center.
Local electoral committees, both within the country and abroad, are to be established by July 26, while candidate registration will be open from July 27 to August 7.
The Ministry of Interior and the Electoral Commission reaffirmed their commitment to holding credible, transparent, and peaceful elections, urging citizens to take an active role in shaping the country’s Fifth Republic.
The announcement comes after President Brice Oligui Nguema—who seized power in a coup two years ago—launched a new political party named the Democratic Union of Builders, signaling a potential shift from military rule toward long-term political engagement.
Nguema reportedly won around 95% of the vote in the most recent presidential election held in April.
