The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved the accession of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger – the three members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) – to the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) as non-ECOWAS members.
The decision was made during GIABA’s second extraordinary ministerial committee meeting held in Accra, Ghana, where ministers unanimously acknowledged the need for collective action against insecurity in the region.
The resolution will be forwarded to the ECOWAS Council of Ministers and the Authority of Heads of State and Government for consideration.
The chairmanship of the committee was also handed over from Nigeria’s Minister of Justice to Sierra Leone’s Minister of Finance.
GIABA was established in 2000 as a specialized ECOWAS institution tasked with combating money laundering and terrorist financing in West Africa.
