At least ten Nigerien soldiers were killed and fifteen others wounded on Friday in two simultaneous attacks carried out by “hundreds of armed men” in the Bolongonga and Samira areas of western Gothèye district, near the borders with Burkina Faso and Mali.
Authorities announced that 41 attackers were neutralized in the clashes that followed.
The region—especially the town of Samira, home to an industrial gold mine—has been a repeated target of militant groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS.
Back in May, eight mine workers were killed by an improvised explosive device in a previous attack.
This latest assault comes amid ongoing violence in Niger, where armed groups continue to carry out attacks despite the military council’s grip on power.
