Cameroon has registered a record number of 82 candidates for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for October 12. According to the electoral commission, the list includes 55 political party nominees and 27 independents.
Among the contenders is current President Paul Biya, 92, who has ruled the country since 1982 and is seeking an eighth term. The youngest hopeful is Daloto Hamada, 31, though his candidacy is expected to be disqualified due to the legal minimum age of 35.
The list also features prominent opposition figures such as Maurice Kamto, Joshua Osih, and Bello Bouba, who first ran for president in 1992, along with women candidates like Hermine Toumaino, mayor of Foumban.
The Constitutional Council is expected to release the final list of approved candidates within 12 days.
