The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, welcomed France’s decision to officially recognize the State of Palestine this coming September, describing it as “in line with Africa’s long-standing position” in support of the Palestinian people’s rights.
Youssouf stated that the French move strengthens the path toward a just resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on international law and UN resolutions, reaffirming the AU’s commitment to the two-state solution.
His remarks came in response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that recognizing Palestine aims to help achieve “a just and lasting peace,” with a focus on ending the war in Gaza and protecting civilians.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also praised France for joining other European nations in recognizing Palestine, calling for the two-state solution to be upheld as the only viable path to ending the conflict.
