African Union Backs Libyan Presidential Council and Reaffirms the Country’s Unity and Sovereignty

At the conclusion of its leadership-level summit, the African Union’s Peace and Security Council expressed full support for Mohamed al-Menfi, President of the Libyan Presidential Council, commending his efforts in addressing the country’s current challenges.

The final communiqué reaffirmed the AU’s firm stance on respecting Libya’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and firmly rejected any form of foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs.

African leaders reiterated their renewed support for an inclusive, Libyan-led political process, including the achievement of national reconciliation with the backing of the African Union and in coordination with the United Nations.

The statement urged all Libyan stakeholders to actively participate in this process to end the transitional period and establish lasting stability.

The Council also called on the African Union Commission to continue supporting the 5+5 Joint Military Committee to ensure the effective implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

Finally, it urged the Libyan Presidential Council to back efforts to unify state institutions and reform the security apparatus as a key step toward state-building.
