The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session to address the recent US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Russia, China, and Pakistan jointly proposed a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of a “dangerous turning point” due to the military escalation, urging all parties to halt hostilities and return to negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.
Russia and China condemned the US strikes, arguing that diplomacy had not yet been exhausted. Acting US Ambassador Dorothy Shea defended the strikes as necessary to counter “Iran’s nuclear ambitions.”
The Russian envoy also recalled the 2003 US claims about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, criticizing what he called Washington’s “fictional narratives.”
President Donald Trump confirmed the destruction of Iran’s key nuclear sites, while Tehran vowed a “dangerous” response, raising fears of a broader regional crisis.
The international community now awaits a possible vote on the tripartite resolution, which may face opposition from the United States.
