The death toll from the devastating floods in Niger State, northern Nigeria, has risen to at least 150, according to the Nigerian Emergency Management Agency.
Officials reported that recent heavy rains triggered massive flooding that swept away dozens of homes in the town of Mokwa and surrounding areas. A total of 265 houses were completely destroyed, two major bridges collapsed, over 3,000 people were displaced, and 78 individuals were hospitalized with injuries.
Rescue teams are still searching for survivors amid fears that the death toll could rise further, as the Niger River continues to overflow above normal levels.
Niger State is among the most flood-prone regions in Nigeria, where seasonal floods regularly occur between May and September due to poor infrastructure and the growing impacts of climate change.
