At least 16 people were killed and more than 400 injured—83 of them seriously—during anti-government protests that erupted on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, in Nairobi and several other Kenyan cities, according to Amnesty International Kenya.
The organization’s executive director, Irũngũ Houghton, stated that most of the casualties were caused by police violence, with at least five people shot dead by security forces.
A coalition of 25 NGOs also reported that eight individuals were treated for gunshot wounds, including three police officers.
The demonstrations marked the first anniversary of the 2024 protests against tax hikes, which claimed over 60 lives. Tensions have recently escalated following the death of blogger Albert Ojuang while in custody. Six individuals, including three police officers, have been charged with his murder.
President William Ruto described the incident as “tragic” and acknowledged the responsibility of the police. Public frustration is mounting over economic stagnation, widespread corruption, and rising taxes.
Human rights organizations have urged protesters to “exercise caution,” as demonstrations continue under tight security, including a government-imposed ban on live media coverage.
