Iran opens mosques and schools as shelters amid Israeli strikes

In a continuing escalation of tensions between Iran and Israel, the Iranian government announced on Sunday that mosques, schools, and metro stations would be opened as safe shelters for civilians during Israeli attacks, while assuring the uninterrupted supply of food, medicine, and fuel.

This move followed urgent warnings issued by the Israeli military, urging Iranian civilians to evacuate areas near nuclear facilities and weapons sites, warning that remaining there would “put their lives at risk.”

Israel reported casualties from Iranian missile strikes targeting cities including Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Bat Yam. The attacks caused widespread destruction, including damage to a major research center at the Weizmann Institute and a key oil refinery in Haifa.

According to Israeli media, the death toll has reached 13, with 345 others injured, as search and rescue operations continue for those trapped under the rubble.

Iran’s response came after Israeli airstrikes launched early Friday under the name “Rising Lion,” targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities and reportedly killing several scientists and military commanders.

Iranian media quoted the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as saying that they used “advanced tactical missiles” with high-explosive warheads, including hypersonic missiles, in their retaliation against Israel.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump called for a “settlement” between the two sides, while Iraq’s Hezbollah Brigades warned against any U.S. intervention.

Germany also imposed heightened security measures to protect Jewish and Israeli institutions on its soil amid concerns of potential Iranian retaliation.

Tensions remain high, with both sides exchanging threats of further strikes, while international efforts continue to prevent the conflict from spiraling into a broader regional war.
