The European Union has called for a fresh start in its relationship with Niger, expressing hope for renewed bilateral cooperation.
The EU’s representative in Niamey emphasized the need for deeper dialogue to better understand the current situation and to properly restore diplomatic ties.
These remarks come after a sharp deterioration in relations following the July 2023 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and the subsequent cancellation of agreements by the military government.
Tensions further escalated when Niger declared the EU ambassador persona non grata. Nevertheless, European officials have reiterated their desire to move past the disagreements and rebuild relations based on mutual respect.
