Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty announced on Sunday evening that negotiations are underway to reach a deal in Gaza that would include a 60-day ceasefire, expressing hope for a subsequent political phase.
He warned that any Israeli resumption of hostilities after such an agreement would pose a serious threat to regional stability, citing Israel’s prior breach of the January 19 agreement.
Abdel Aty emphasized that regional security discussions are contingent on the political will of countries in the region, stating that “the arrogance of force will not bring security to Israel.” He also noted U.S. understanding of the need to ensure lasting guarantees for any future ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Israeli media reported that the Israeli security cabinet convened to discuss the war, with several ministers expressing optimism about reaching a partial deal to recover the hostages. Reports also suggested that the Israeli military prefers a prisoner exchange once the “Gideon’s Chariots” operation concludes.
On Saturday, Israeli media indicated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had sent signals of a desire to end the war.
Since October 7, 2023, the war on Gaza has resulted in over 56,500 martyrs, 133,419 wounded, and widespread destruction throughout the territory.
