International officials in Geneva, praised Morocco’s commitment to promoting road safety and its leadership on the global stage in advancing the cause.
The officials highlighted the success of the fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, held in February in Marrakech, as well as Morocco’s generous contribution to the UN Road Safety Fund (UNRSF).
“Morocco plays a vital role in promoting and enhancing road safety not only at the national level, in Africa, or in the Arab world but also globally,”
Nneka Henry, Head of the UNRSF said.
She added that the fourth Ministerial Conference held in Marrakech was “an incredible milestone in this direction.”
“The 10th session of the Advisory Board of the UN Road Safety Fund is being held for the first time under the presidency of an Arab and African country: Morocco,” she noted with satisfaction.
“This meeting will address key strategic decisions on how we, as the UN, member states, civil society, and the private sector, can work together to truly improve road safety in all its dimensions,” she emphasised.
For his part, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, noted that “many important projects have been completed, but unfortunately, they’re not enough, as there are still far too many road casualties.”
“We need to improve education and law enforcement and strengthen both global and individual commitment and we are counting on Morocco’s leadership to help achieve these goals,” he stated.
The UN official applauded two key decisions made by Morocco during the Marrakech Conference: “First, the establishment of the Mohammed VI Road Safety Award.
The second is the decision to provide two UN-approved helmets with every purchase of a motorised two-wheeled vehicle,” which he described as “a revolutionary step.”
