Manufacturers, Agency in deal to boost measurement standards in Nigeria

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has pledged continued collaboration with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to ensure accurate calibration and standardisation for consumer value.

Director-General of MAN, Mr Segun Ajayi-Kadir, made this known during the 2025 World Metrology Day celebration held in Lagos on Tuesday.

The event was with the theme: ‘Measurements for all times, for all People’.

Ajayi-Kadir stated that the theme highlighted the universal and lasting relevance of precise measurements across sectors.

He said accurate measurement was more than a technical task, serving as a vital foundation for all human activities.

In manufacturing, he noted, measurement is essential for quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and product reliability.

Ajayi-Kadir added that measurement supports global competitiveness and reinforces consumer trust in Nigerian-made goods.

“Manufacturers now depend heavily on accurate measurement to reduce waste, meet customer demands, and safeguard the environment,” he said.

He stressed that standardisation plays a key role in building consumer confidence and aligning with international benchmarks.

Ajayi-Kadir praised SON’s dedication to advancing metrology in Nigeria and improving national quality systems.

He said SON’s efforts were crucial in boosting industrial growth and global integration.

MAN, he noted, remains committed to partnering with SON to promote precision, standardisation, and continuous improvement in manufacturing.

Speaking at the event, SON’s Director-General, Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, urged manufacturers to avoid unqualified calibration providers.

He said SON was working with relevant bodies to eliminate such operators and uphold trusted calibration services.

Okeke disclosed that SON was tackling challenges confronting small businesses through training and awareness campaigns.

He added that enforcing standards would improve product quality and enhance competitiveness nationwide.

“To support manufacturers, SON has decentralised calibration services to Lagos, Kano, Abuja, and Port Harcourt,” Okeke said.

He explained that this initiative offers easier access for businesses across various regions.

He further confirmed the launch of Mobile Calibration Services, also called Grassroots Calibration Services.

According to him, this service brings calibration directly to small and remote businesses, helping to boost economic growth.

Okeke noted SON’s role as Nigeria’s apex body for standards and metrology enforcement.

He said SON was establishing a national metrology facility in line with the Nigeria First Policy and Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to him, the facility aims to reduce capital flight and support economic development.

“Our metrology institute in Enugu is receiving more equipment, improved infrastructure, and increased training for officers,” Okeke said.

He stated that accredited laboratories would soon achieve traceability locally, eliminating dependence on foreign institutes.

Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, said measurement standards are crucial for economic impact.

Represented by Commander Charles Obi, Adeniyi said accurate measurement supports fair trade and proper duty assessments.

He noted that Customs witnesses the value of measurement daily, from container checks to tariff calculations.

“Invisible but vital, measurement standards support all visible trade and economic processes,” he added.

Adeniyi noted that as Nigeria industrialises, metrology becomes central to quality control in production.
