Burkina Faso Foils Coup Attempt Amid Growing Instability

Ouagadougou, April 21, 2025 – The government of Burkina Faso has announced it thwarted a “major conspiracy” aimed at toppling the current military regime. The Security Minister accused exiled officers residing in Côte d’Ivoire of orchestrating the plan. Thanks to timely intelligence efforts, the attempt was foiled and a number of arrests were made within the army and security forces.

A Familiar Pattern of Coups

Burkina Faso has experienced chronic political instability, with numerous coups since its independence in 1960. Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who came to power in a 2022 coup, has reportedly survived five coup attempts, three of which occurred in 2024 alone.

Underlying Causes

  • Economic hardship: Endemic poverty and lack of development.
  • Security crisis: Increased violence by groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIS, especially in the north and east.
  • Military divisions: Internal rivalries and conflicting loyalties within the armed forces.
  • Possible foreign interference: Suspicions of external influence fueling unrest.

Regional and International Repercussions

  • Regional instability: Frequent coups in Burkina Faso destabilize the wider Sahel region.
  • Foreign policy shifts: The country has aligned more closely with Russia and drifted from traditional partners like France.
  • Diplomatic concerns: International actors express growing concern about democratic backsliding and human rights, with potential sanctions looming.
