US in talks with Taliban for prisoner swap – Reports

The outgoing administration of Joe Biden of USA is negotiating with the Taliban, under UN sanctions for terrorism exchange of detained Americans in Afghanistan for at least one profile high prisoner.

The administration called for exchange of the prisoner who were allegedly said to have associated with Osama bin Laden, the late leader of al-Qaeda (banned in Russia as a terrorist organisation.)

The Wall Street Journal gave the report on Tuesday.

Washington is requesting the release of George Glezmann, Ryan Corbett and Mahmoud Habibi, detained in Afghanistan in 2022, in exchange for Muhammad Rahim al Afghani.

Al Afghani was the senior al-Qaeda aide, according to the newspaper.

The Taliban (under UN sanctions for terrorism) came to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, toppling the U.S. backed government as U.S. and NATO troops were withdrawing from the country.

Their withdrawal was after almost 20 years of military presence there.

It said that numerous countries and international organisations responded to the militant takeover by cutting aid to and ties with Kabul.
