Constitutional Court confirms Romuald Wadagni as winner of Benin’s presidential election

Benin’s Constitutional Court has validated the final results of the presidential election held on April 12, 2026, confirming a decisive victory for Romuald Wadagni after completing its legal review.

Certified results show Wadagni secured 94.27% of the vote, defeating his sole challenger Paul Hounkpè, who received 5.73%, while voter turnout was revised upward to 63.57% from earlier estimates.

Wadagni is set to take office on May 23, 2026, marking continuity with the current administration led by outgoing President Patrice Talon.

The election takes place in the context of significant constitutional changes, including a reform adopted in November 2025 extending the presidential term from five to seven years while maintaining the two-term limit.

This adjustment is expected to shape both the tenure of the incoming government and the broader electoral cycle in the country.

Regionally, the outcome has been acknowledged by key partners, with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extending congratulations and emphasizing the importance of bilateral ties and cooperation.

The confirmation of results formally concludes the electoral process and sets the stage for the incoming administration to address national priorities under the revised constitutional framework.
