The civilian death toll in Lebanon continues to rise as the regional war involving the United States Israel and Iran intensifies with airstrikes expanding across the country and large scale displacement increasing.
Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health reports that at least six hundred eighty seven people have been killed since the beginning of the month including ninety eight children as Israeli strikes targeting infrastructure linked to Hezbollah spread beyond southern areas into densely populated urban districts.
The escalation follows the joint military operation launched by the United States and Israel against Iran after the collapse of nuclear negotiations earlier in the year targeting Iranian missile and nuclear capabilities.
Lebanon has since emerged as one of the main regional fronts in the confrontation.
Officials say the fighting has displaced more than eight hundred sixteen thousand people creating a rapidly worsening humanitarian situation as families flee southern districts and suburbs of Beirut amid warnings of additional strikes.
In one of the latest incidents nine people including five children were killed in an airstrike near Sidon according to local emergency services while rescue workers continued searching damaged residential buildings for survivors.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam acknowledged the severity of the crisis saying the government remains committed to maintaining state sovereignty but faces enormous challenges as the country remains under bombardment.
Data compiled by the World Health Organization indicates that about ninety percent of those killed in Lebanon are Lebanese nationals while the remaining victims include Syrian Palestinian and other foreign residents.
Hospitals across the country are under mounting pressure as humanitarian agencies warn that displacement levels are approaching those seen during previous regional wars.
