The Independent Electoral Commission in Côte d’Ivoire has announced preliminary results indicating that the ruling Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP) has won a majority of seats in parliament following legislative elections held last week.
According to results released on Monday evening, the RHDP secured 197 of the 255 seats in the National Assembly.
The main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI), won 32 seats, while independent candidates captured 23 seats. Smaller parties obtained one seat each.
Voter turnout stood at around 35% of the 8.5 million registered voters.
The Supreme Court of Côte d’Ivoire is expected to review any legal challenges submitted by candidates and parties over the next five days before officially confirming the final results.
The parliamentary vote comes shortly after the presidential election held in October, which was won by incumbent President Alassane Ouattara.
