The Tunis City Theatre Troupe marked the 70th anniversary of its founding by staging its new production, Kahlat Al-Ahdhab, on Sunday evening at the Tunis Municipal Theatre in the capital Tunis.
The production crowns the journey of a troupe regarded as a cornerstone of public theatre in Tunisia, having played a key role in nurturing generations of prominent theatre practitioners.
Written and directed by Tahar Issa Ben Arbi, the play revisits national memory, spanning the period from the 1930s to the late 1950s, with a particular focus on the role of women artists in shaping cultural consciousness during the anti-colonial struggle and the emergence of the modern state.
The cast includes Kawther Bardi, who also oversaw production, alongside Farhat Jdidi, Khaled Zidi, Ikram Azzouz, Samira Msikh, and a group of emerging performers.
The troupe was officially established following a municipal decision in 1955, and has since remained a permanent institution in Tunisian theatre, closely associated with pioneering figures who helped lay the foundations of modern theatre traditions in the country.
