Guinea’s Ministry of Defense of Guinea announced armed clashes between security forces and gunmen on the outskirts of Conakry, the capital of Guinea.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry said an exchange of gunfire took place in the morning, during which security forces neutralized the armed group and arrested several of its members. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The security escalation comes on the eve of the presidential election scheduled for Sunday. Images circulated by local media showed bullet impacts and damage to several buildings in the affected area.
As a precautionary measure, the authorities announced the closure of land and air borders and imposed a nationwide ban on vehicle movement throughout polling day, in an effort to ensure the vote proceeds under secure conditions.
