Police in Tanzania said five people were killed after a rescue helicopter crashed while conducting a medical evacuation mission on Mount Kilimanjaro.
The crash occurred on Thursday morning near Barafu Camp, along one of the routes leading to the summit. The victims included the pilot, a doctor, a tour guide, and two foreign nationals.
Authorities said the aircraft, operated by a local tourism company, was en route to evacuate ill climbers when it went down in a high-altitude area known for volatile weather and low oxygen levels. No survivors were reported.
Africa’s highest peak and a major tourist destination, Mount Kilimanjaro regularly requires air evacuations for climbers suffering from altitude sickness. Emergency teams were dispatched to the site, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
