Gunmen have abducted at least 28 people, including women and children, in Plateau State, in central Nigeria, as they were travelling to an annual Islamic gathering on Sunday evening.
Local sources said the attackers stopped a passenger bus in a rural area and forced everyone on board to disembark at gunpoint before taking them away to an unknown location.
Nigerian authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, and the identity of the perpetrators remains unclear. Reports indicate, however, that relatives of the abducted victims have begun receiving ransom demands, a common tactic used by kidnapping gangs operating in the region.
The incident comes just one day after authorities announced the release of 130 students and teachers who had been abducted in a neighbouring state, underscoring Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with mass kidnappings.
