At least nine people were killed and ten others injured in a random shooting carried out by unknown gunmen in the town of Bekkersdal, around 40 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg, South African police said.
Authorities reported that the attackers opened fire indiscriminately on people in the streets near an unlicensed tavern selling alcohol illegally. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
The incident marks the second mass shooting in South Africa this December, following a similar attack near Pretoria on December 6 that left 12 people dead.
South Africa, home to roughly 63 million people, continues to face severe security challenges and ranks among the countries with the highest homicide rates globally.
