The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamat Ali Youssouf, arrived on Friday in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, for a visit carrying significant political and regional implications.
During the visit, he held talks with Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi. The meeting, described as cordial, focused on the rapidly evolving security and political challenges in the Great Lakes region.
Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s firm support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the DRC, stressing that these principles are a cornerstone of regional stability. He also reiterated the AU’s commitment to the Washington and Doha tracks, aimed at strengthening dialogue and addressing the root causes of regional crises.
President Tshisekedi, for his part, welcomed the African Union’s stance and support, describing it as a key pillar in confronting both internal and external challenges, particularly amid recurring tensions along the country’s eastern borders.
The visit comes at a time when calls are growing for intensified diplomatic efforts to address ongoing conflicts in the Great Lakes region, amid fears of further regional instability.
