The British government has announced sanctions against four senior commanders of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), accusing them of involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity in the city of El-Fasher, North Darfur. The move coincides with the announcement of a new £21 million humanitarian aid package.
Heading the sanctions list is Abdel Rahim Hamdan Dagalo, deputy commander of the RSF and brother of its overall leader, alongside three prominent field commanders. The UK said the measures aim to hold those responsible for “mass killings and sexual violence” to account and to prevent further atrocities.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the financial assistance would be directed toward providing food, medical support and shelter for displaced civilians, reaffirming Britain’s support for the Sudanese people.
The British action comes just weeks after the European Union imposed similar sanctions on the RSF’s deputy leader, as international investigations into Darfur-related abuses continue.
