Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has witnessed a new surge of violence after fighting resumed between pro-government militias and the rebel coalition led by the M23 movement, despite recent ceasefire agreements.
The rebels captured the villages of Kashiki and Betona in North Kivu province, forcing the pro-government Wazalendo forces to retreat toward the town of Kauto, where they joined regular army units.
These developments come just days after the warring parties signed a framework agreement committing to a ceasefire and to working toward a final peace deal — underscoring the fragile security situation in the region.
