Mali Charges Two Senior Generals with Attempted Destabilization

A military court in Mali has charged Generals Abbas Dembélé and Néma Sagara with “attempted destabilization” and “undermining state security,” over allegations they took part in a plot to overthrow the ruling military council.

The two generals were arrested in August as part of a broader sweep that saw dozens of military personnel detained. They were subsequently dismissed from the army in October, along with nine other officers.

The development comes amid ongoing controversy over the future of military rule in Mali, which has faced persistent political instability since the series of coups that began in 2020.
