Europe Reimposes UN Sanctions on Iran

The European troika (Germany, France, and the UK) officially announced on Sunday the reactivation of UN sanctions on Iran, following the expiration of the “snapback” mechanism deadline.

The decision was made due to Tehran’s “failure to meet its nuclear commitments,” the foreign ministers said in a joint statement.

The statement urged Iran to “refrain from any escalation and return to compliance,” stressing that the reinstatement of sanctions “does not mean the end of diplomacy.”

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio called on Iran to agree to direct talks with Washington, saying that “the door to diplomacy remains open.”

The move restores an arms embargo and economic measures, ten years after they were lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal.
