Public hospitals across Nigeria have been hit by a five-day nationwide strike launched by doctors demanding payment of outstanding wages and improved social welfare.
According to Kazim Odumbako, Secretary-General of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, repeated negotiations with the government have failed.
The doctors’ demands include the disbursement of the 2025 residency training fund and settlement of outstanding financial arrears.
Around 15,000 resident doctors are taking part in the strike, the latest in a series of protests in the health sector, following last month’s nurses’ strike calling for better pay and increased staffing.
