An armed group known as the “Alaa Ag El Bachir Katiba” has announced its integration into the Azawad army under the banner of the Azawad Liberation Front, according to a statement issued on August 24, 2025, by its commander, Mohamed Ag Sidi.
The statement said the decision was taken “in response to internal directives” and aimed at “strengthening unity” in northern Mali. The group stated that its objective is to contribute to the “protection of civilians and the reinforcement of collective defense” against government forces and their allies.
The katiba stressed that its alignment is not intended as hostility toward other actors with similar goals, but rather as an effort to “consolidate positions” amid rising security tensions in the region.
This development comes as clashes continue between Malian forces and various armed groups in the north of the country, while regional and international initiatives seek to revive a political settlement process for the conflict.
