Guinea’s transitional president, Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, has issued a decree creating a new directorate dedicated to overseeing elections, as part of preparations for a constitutional referendum expected in the final quarter of the year. The announcement was broadcast via official bulletins on national television.
The new directorate will operate under the direct authority of the Ministry of the Interior. It will be tasked with organizing electoral processes and regularly updating the biometric voter register.
It will also help establish specialized security units responsible for safeguarding the elections in coordination with traditional security forces.
In a previous speech, President Doumbouya stated that 2025 would mark Guinea’s return to constitutional order. The government has announced that the constitutional referendum will take place on September 21.
Prime Minister Bah Oury has also pledged to hold legislative and presidential elections before the end of the year.
It is worth noting that past demands to establish an independent electoral commission were rejected by the transitional authorities, who insisted on keeping electoral oversight under the Ministry of the Interior
