Mali’s cabinet has approved a draft amendment to the transitional charter granting President Assimi Goïta a full five-year renewable presidential term starting this year. The decision follows recommendations from the national dialogue held in April.
The proposed change redefines Goïta’s status from “transitional president” to “President of the Republic,” with the possibility of term renewal based on security developments—similar to the approaches taken in Niger and Burkina Faso.
This move aligns with a broader regional trend led by the Alliance of Sahel States, formed in July 2024, advocating for extended transitions to counter terrorism and instability. The draft is expected to undergo further ratification, amid international calls for transparency in Mali’s political process.
