Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, has revealed that military operations conducted by the national army and self-defense groups over the past year have successfully liberated 212 residential villages. As a result, the state now controls 71% of the country’s total 274,000-square-kilometer land area.
The Prime Minister provided these details during a comprehensive presentation before parliament, outlining the government’s achievements in 2024 and its agenda for 2025.
He further stated that the government has recently trained over 14,000 soldiers and recruited thousands of fighters to support the country’s ongoing battle against armed groups.
Ouédraogo emphasized that Burkina Faso’s war against what he described as terrorist groups has had a positive impact on the social and economic conditions of civilians. Many citizens have been able to resume their normal activities as security has been restored in numerous towns and villages previously under the control of insurgent forces.
It is worth noting that in previous years, nearly 45% of Burkina Faso’s total land area was outside government control due to the expansion of armed groups in the region.
