At least 40 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa have died after their boat capsized off the Tunisian coast near the city of Mahdia.
The vessel was carrying about 70 people, making the incident one of the deadliest migrant shipwrecks in the region this year.
As the number of people fleeing conflict and poverty continues to rise, Tunisia has become a major transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe.
The tragedy once again highlights the perilous journeys undertaken by migrants and the growing pressure on North African countries to manage irregular migration crises.
