Somali forces kill 27 Al-Shabab fighters in coordinated southern offensive

Somalia’s Ministry of Defence has confirmed a large-scale military operation against Al-Shabab fighters in southern regions, carried out by national forces with support from regional units and international partners.

Authorities said the offensive targeted key militant strongholds in the districts of Jilib, Hagar, and Afmadow across Lower and Middle Juba, long considered strategic bases for the group.

Military officials reported that at least 27 fighters were killed during the operation, including individuals believed to hold key positions within the organization, although further details have not been disclosed.

The offensive combined ground advances by the Somali National Armed Forces and Jubaland security units with precision airstrikes conducted by international partners, targeting hideouts and logistical hubs.

Security forces also recovered a significant cache of weapons, including machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, assault rifles, and landmines, which authorities said were intended for attacks on civilians and security facilities.

The Ministry of Defence said the operation is part of an intensified campaign to weaken Al-Shabab’s capabilities, particularly in southern areas where the group maintains a strong presence.

Officials noted that the strategy extends beyond battlefield gains, focusing on disrupting supply networks, limiting militant mobility, and stabilizing recaptured areas.

The operation aligns with broader counterterrorism efforts supported by the African Union mission and international partners to strengthen state authority and improve security conditions.

Despite reported progress, Al-Shabab continues to pose a threat through asymmetric attacks, including bombings and targeted assaults, prompting authorities to maintain sustained military pressure alongside stabilization efforts.
