Moroccan authorities have announced legal charges against more than 2,400 individuals involved in the recent protests that escalated into violent clashes across several cities.
According to official figures, 2,480 people have been charged, with 1,473 currently in pre-trial detention. The charges include “armed rebellion,” “insulting a public official,” and “acts of violence.”
The unrest was sparked by a youth-led movement known as “Generation Z 212,” which criticized poor public services and government spending on large-scale projects.
Although the movement’s initial calls were peaceful, several areas witnessed violent incidents resulting in deaths and injuries.
The mass arrests have drawn condemnation from local and international human rights groups, while the Public Prosecutor’s Office denounced what it described as “rioting and vandalism”, emphasizing that all legal procedures were carried out in accordance with the law.
