Sweden and Ukraine have unveiled what officials describe as a historic step to bolster Kyiv’s air force through a major potential deal to supply advanced JAS 39 Gripen E fighter jets — the newest and most sophisticated version of Sweden’s flagship aircraft.
A letter of intent was signed between Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, paving the way for a landmark export agreement that could include up to 150 aircraft. While not yet a binding contract, the move signals a deepening of defense cooperation between Stockholm and Kyiv.
If finalized, the deal would mark Ukraine’s largest fighter aircraft acquisition since the war began, and the biggest export contract in Sweden’s history.
The Gripen E is prized for its ease of maintenance, short takeoff and landing capabilities — allowing operations from highways or damaged runways — and its multi-role performance in both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.
Reports suggest Sweden may finance part of the deal using frozen Russian assets, while Ukraine expects to begin receiving the first jets next year, though full production and delivery could take several years.
