The African Union has welcomed the decision by the “Union for Peace” (UPC) and “3R” armed groups to disband their military structures in Bangui on July 10, as part of broader efforts to restore peace in the Central African Republic.
The AU called on remaining armed factions to lay down their weapons and join the peace process.
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the move marked “a significant step forward in the political process,” stressing the importance of a comprehensive national dialogue that includes all stakeholders.
This development follows a peace agreement signed in April between the two groups and the central government, aimed at ending a decade-long conflict that erupted after the ousting of former president François Bozizé in 2013.
Despite the presence of international peacekeepers and Russian fighters, the country continues to face serious security challenges, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable political solutions that foster national reconciliation.
