Russia and Mali have signed a series of cooperation agreements covering civil nuclear energy, economic collaboration, and security during the visit of Mali’s transitional president, General Assimi Goïta, to Moscow.
The agreements followed talks between Goïta and Russian President Vladimir Putin, where both leaders praised the strength of bilateral relations dating back 65 years.
Three key documents were signed: a framework agreement outlining the foundations of bilateral relations, another establishing a joint intergovernmental commission for trade and economic cooperation, and a third on peaceful nuclear energy.
The agreements come just days after Mali signed a similar deal with Burkina Faso.
In a separate meeting, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov held talks with his Malian counterpart, General Sadio Camara, to discuss military and security cooperation.
Both sides noted the dynamic development of their defense ties, with the Malian official praising what he called “Russia’s efforts in combating Nazism.”
This marks President Goïta’s second official visit to Russia since taking power. He previously attended the Russia-Africa Summit in July 2023.
