U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a “full and comprehensive ceasefire” between Israel and Iran, aiming to end a 12-day war that triggered mass displacement from Tehran and brought the region to the brink of wider conflict.
In a post on his platform Truth Social, Trump praised both sides for their “courage and wisdom” in ending the fighting, stating that the ceasefire would take effect six hours after the announcement — with Iran halting attacks first, followed by Israel 12 hours later.
However, the initial hours following the declaration saw renewed hostilities, with the Israeli military warning of a series of Iranian rocket attacks, including a strike on Beersheba that left three people dead and nine injured.
Iran, which denies possessing nuclear weapons, linked the ceasefire to an end to what it called Israel’s “aggression,” according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The Qatari and U.S. mediation efforts were instrumental in reaching the deal. Officials confirmed that Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while Qatar’s Prime Minister relayed Tehran’s approval after a phone call.
Trump described Iran’s response to the nuclear facility strikes as “weak,” revealing that Tehran had informed Washington in advance of the attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, allowing for preventive measures and avoiding casualties.
Although no official confirmation has yet come from Israel or Iran, global markets welcomed the announcement, with U.S. stock indexes rising and oil prices falling amid easing supply concerns.
