AU Chief, Morocco’s Envoy discuss security, development

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) Mahmoud Ali Youssouf received on Friday at the pan-African organization’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, Morocco’s Ambassador Permanent Representative to the AU and UNECA Mohamed Arrouchi.

During the meeting, which came at the end of Morocco’s chairmanship of the Peace DCand Security Council (PSC) in March, Ali Youssouf highlighted Morocco’s valuable contribution to advancing AU’s peace, security and governance agenda, and reiterated his willingness to continue working with the Kingdom for a peaceful Africa.

On this occasion, the AUC chairman praised the vision and commitment of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to peace, security and development on the African continent.

For his part, Arrouchi presented an overview of the main activities organized during the Moroccan presidency of the PSC, stressing the statutory role of the AUC President in promoting peace-building efforts and initiatives on the continent.

The diplomat also praised the Moroccan chair’s organization of several activities, including informal consultations with countries in political transition, stressing that the Kingdom urges accelerating the return of these countries to the AU.

He also recalled the holding, under Moroccan chairmanship, of a PSC ministerial meeting on “Artificial intelligence and its impact on peace, security and governance in Africa”, as well as an induction meeting for new PSC members in Arusha, Tanzania, which culminated in recommendations to improve the Council’s effectiveness.

In this respect, Arrouchi stressed strengthening the role of the PSC in conflict prevention on the continent.

Under Moroccan chairmanship, the PSC also held meetings on other themes, including the Women, Peace and Security agenda and deradicalization as a lever in the fight against violent extremism, in addition to a meeting on the situation in South Sudan, Arrouchi added.
