Why we created African School of Governance – Rwanda’s president

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame says African School of Governance (ASG) will carry the aspirations of the African continent.

Kagame said the institution was founded with the expectation that, through its teaching, research and advocacy, something convincing and capable of changing the lives of Africans would emerge.

In a statement, ASG Foundation said that Kagame emphasised his commitment to fostering transformative governance and leadership across Africa during a meeting with Nigeria’s Prof. Kingsley Moghalu in Kigali.

Kagame and Moghalu are Co-Founder and President of ASG, respectively.

ASG, unveiled in October 2024 and based in Kigali, aims to equip emerging African leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to drive the continent’s development.

The institution will offer graduate programmes in policy, research, governance, leadership and management.

According to ASG Foundation, Kagame believes there is a missing link in a mindset-shift among Africans about their identity and confidence, and ASG’s mission is to provide the missing link.

“ASG was conceived because there have been several initiatives to develop the African continent rapidly and there have been some results,” ASG Foundation quoted Kagame as saying.

It said that Moghalu briefed Kagame on the accreditation process for ASG, recruitment of faculty and academic support staff as well as plans for pan-African student recruitment from across African countries and a grand launch in January 2025.

It quoted Moghalu to have said he praised Kagame’s commitment to Africa’s progress and transformation.

“ASG is poised to become a pivotal institution in addressing Africa’s leadership and governance challenges, fostering good governance and advancing sustainable development,” it quoted Moghalu as saying.
