France snubs Niger’s no fly zone; enters Niamey airport with troops to free ‘dangerous’ prisoners

The new military leadership in Niger, National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland, has accused France of wanting to destabilize Niger.

The spokesperson for the CNSP, indicated that, the “French forces aircraft took off” Wednesday from N’Djamena, Chad, “a military plane at 6:01 a.m. local time to enter its closed airspace.

A press statement issued on Wednesday by the CNSP accused the French forces of deliberately releasing terrorist prisoners, possibly to destabilize Niger.

“This aircraft voluntarily cut off all contact with air traffic control at the entrance to our space from 6:39 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. local time,” Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane, spokesperson for the CNSP, said in the statement.

“Extremely serious events that are underway in Niger due to the behavior of French forces on our territory and their accomplices.”

These new accusations would risk intensifying the current tension between France and the military in power in Niger.

However, according to the CNSP spokesperson, several of its terrorists were apprehended in various operations, citing “a situation of generalized insecurity”.

The military in power in Niger closed the country’s airspace on Sunday, while ECOWAS does not rule out military intervention if the military does not restore ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to his duties.
