U.S. Delays Iran Strikes as Iraq Oil Exports Collapse Amid Escalating Gulf Crisis

Tensions in the Middle East entered a critical but temporarily moderated phase on Monday after the United States announced a short-term delay to planned military action against Iran, while Iraq simultaneously declared a halt to major oil exports due to ongoing regional disruptions.
Diplomatic Pause Amid Rising Military Pressure
U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered a five-day postponement of anticipated strikes targeting Iranian energy infrastructure, according to official White House statements.
The decision follows what U.S. officials described as “productive and detailed conversations” with Iranian counterparts, alongside a high-level diplomatic exchange between Trump and Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
The delay effectively extends a previous 48-hour ultimatum issued by Washington demanding the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The new deadline is now set for March 28.
While the postponement signals a potential opening for de-escalation, military assets in the region remain on high alert, and no formal agreement has yet been announced.
العراق Declares Force Majeure as Oil Exports Collapse
In a parallel development with significant global economic implications, Iraq’s Ministry of Oil has declared force majeure on all oil operations involving international oil companies.
The disruption stems directly from the continued blockade and instability affecting maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global crude shipments.
The state-owned Basra Oil Company reported a dramatic drop in production—from approximately 3.3 million barrels per day to just 900,000 bpd.
With exports effectively halted, Iraq has redirected its remaining output toward domestic consumption, prioritizing fuel for electricity generation. Storage facilities in southern Iraq have reportedly reached maximum capacity, further compounding the crisis.
Security Escalation داخل بغداد
Security conditions in Baghdad have deteriorated sharply over the past 48 hours, with multiple high-profile attacks targeting key state and paramilitary institutions.
On March 21, a drone strike hit the headquarters of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service in the Mansour district, killing one officer. Iraqi authorities described the device as a booby-trapped drone, and investigations are ongoing.
In a separate escalation, the Popular Mobilisation Forces reported that several of its positions in Baghdad were struck by U.S. drones overnight. The strikes were described as retaliatory measures following rocket attacks on Camp Victory and a U.S. diplomatic facility near Baghdad International Airport.
Major General Saad Maan, spokesperson for Iraq’s Security Media Cell, confirmed the incidents and reiterated the government’s commitment to pursuing those responsible for the attacks.
Global Oil Markets React
Energy markets responded swiftly to the evolving situation. Crude oil prices, which had surged to $113 per barrel amid fears of imminent conflict, dropped to approximately $101 following news of the U.S. postponement.
In an effort to stabilize global supply, the U.S. Department of Energy has initiated an emergency release of 45.2 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Analysts caution, however, that the reprieve may be temporary. Continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz—through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supply passes—poses a persistent risk to energy markets and global economic stability.
Outlook
The next five days are expected to be decisive. Diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran will likely determine whether the region moves toward de-escalation or enters a broader military confrontation.
Meanwhile, Iraq’s production crisis underscores the fragility of global energy infrastructure in times of geopolitical तनाव, with ripple effects already visible across international markets.
