AFCON : Nigeria’s Super Eagles leapfrog Elephants (1-0)

Nigeria’s William Troost-Ekong dashed the hope of hosts Cote d’Ivoire who had Thursday chance to jump straight into thesecond phase of the AFCON tournament. 

In the second day for Group A, the Nigerian side scored aVAR reviewed penalty which led them to their maiden victory in the competition. 

Captain Serge Aurier’s playmates spurned a host of chances and paid the price after 2023 Africa best footballer Victor Osimhen was fouled in the box.

Ivorian fans at Alassane Ouattara stadium in Abidjan tried to push their team to glory but their cheers were echoing less and less as the minutes were trickling. 

Nigeria now pocket four points and draw level with Equatorial Guinea on four points in their group. 

The Nigerian improved on a poor opening draw (1-1) against Equatorial Guinea. The Super Eagles’ victory also fires the pressure on the Ivorian hosts  ahead of the final round of Group A games.

Meanwhile, with one match to play, Cote d’Ivoire rank thirdwith tjree points won after their opening victory over Guinea-Bissau.
